Medicare Part B: Coverage and 2026 Costs

Review Medicare Part B coverage, the 2026 standard premium and deductible, enrollment timing, and questions to ask before delaying Part B.

Medicare Part B is medical insurance. It helps cover medically necessary doctor services, outpatient care, preventive services, durable medical equipment, ambulance services, and certain home health services.

2026 Medicare Part B costs

The standard Part B premium is $202.90 per month in 2026, and the annual Part B deductible is $283. Some people pay more based on income. After the deductible, Original Medicare commonly pays 80% of the Medicare-approved amount for covered Part B services, and you generally pay 20% when the provider accepts assignment.

When to enroll

Your Initial Enrollment Period generally lasts seven months: the three months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month, and the three months after. Some people can delay Part B without a penalty while covered by a qualifying employer group health plan based on current employment. COBRA and retiree coverage do not work the same way as current-employment coverage, so verify your situation before delaying enrollment.

Before delaying Part B

Ask the employer benefits administrator whether your current coverage is primary to Medicare and whether it qualifies you for a Special Enrollment Period. Keep written proof of coverage and employment.
